Bearing lifespan based on PV value (FB)

The FB bearing is deemed to have reached the end of its useful life when wear exceeds 0.04mm. Under normal operating temperatures the lifespan in hours (H) may be calculated as follows:

(bearing rotates and shaft is stationary)
H = 1,200,000/PV

(shaft rotates and bearing is stationary)
H = 600,000/PV

where PV is measured in kg/cm2om/min. (PV's given in psiofpm may be converted to metric units by dividing by 47.)

If the PV is not known, it may be determined from this formula:

PV = (p x W x N)/(10 x L)   where p is 3.14159, W is load (in Kg), N is rpm, and L is bushing length (in mm).

EXAMPLE: Bearing lifespan based on PV value (FB)

A certain application calls for a 10mm shaft, an applied load of 31.8 kg (70 lbs), and a shaft rotation of 3,000 rpm. The bushing is 15mm long. There is no lubrication and temperature is 110°F/43°C (normal).

In this case, PV = (p x 31.8 x 3,000)/(10 x 15) = 1,998 kg/cm2·m/min (94,000 psi·fpm)

and lifespan is = 600,000/1,998 = 300 hours.

In general, higher temperatures will reduce operating life, and lubrication will prolong it. Please consult our engineering department for details relating to your specific project.
